Escape from Innsmouth
Innsmouth was once a prosperous trading town located on the north coast of Massachusetts. Early in the 19th century her great sailing ships traveled the world in search of trade and treasure. A series of mishaps brought the town to the brink of financial ruin, but it was saved when Captain Obed Marsh discovered a secret source of gold among the islands of the South Pacific. Some whisper that old Obed Marsh made a pact with the devil. The truth is much more sinister.
The first part of a campaign of the same name released in 1992 for the Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG takes a group of investigators answering a call for help to the infamous fishing town. Unwelcoming townsfolk and horrible secrets await them, will they be able to leave unscathed?
Shadow over Innsmouth has always been my favorite story by H. P. Lovecraft and when I found a pdf for this campaign some years ago I loved how the authors had fleshed out the whole town. If, like me, you have played the videogame Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth you will know how the main story of this adventure develops. However, there are lots of characters and locations that the videogame left out and, in order to make this experience fresh I intend to give bigger roles to some characters not seen in the videogame.
Me as a Keeper
Since this would be my first time ever running an RPG game as Keeper/DM/GM I’d rather just play the first part of the campaign, the one that gives it its name and leave the second part, the Raid on Innsmouth, for a later time. Mostly because this way we could complete it in just 2 or 3 sessions.
Getting the investigators to go to Innsmouth requires some inventive on my part since I’d like the characters to have a solid motivation or interest to go there. Therefore, I’m going to ask you to prepare a character beforehand. Not necessarily their stats but their occupation at least. This is just so I can work on a way to make them interested in going to the town.
The main occupations I have in mind right now are (but feel free to suggest any other):
+ Private Investigator
+ Police Officer (preferably retired)
+ Drifter (or someone looking for a job)
+ University Professor or similar
We can talk about this using the Meetup’s comments or private messaging (so be sure to have that enabled!) or through good ol’ email.
When and Where?
**Still to be decided!**
I would prefer to play on Friday or Saturday evening but the biggest problem is that I can’t offer a place to play!
